Sheriff: Teen leads deputies on chase through Johnston County at 130 mph

A 17-year-old is facing multiple charges after a chase across Johnston County on Friday night.

Just before midnight, a Johnston County Sheriff's deputy caught a Dodge Charger traveling more than 130 mph on U.S. Route 70 Business inside the Town of Clayton city limits, according to officials. The deputy chased after him, but soon lost sight of the car.

Another deputy spotted the speeding car on its way toward Smithfield and again attempted to stop it. The car was traveling over 130 mph down Cleveland Road, authorities said. Once again, the pursuing deputy lost sight of the car and the chase ended.

A short time later, deputies received a report of an accident on Interstate 40 at the Cleveland Road overpass.

According to officials with the N.C. Highway Patrol, the car exited Cleveland Road just before the I-40 bridge and flew through the air for 185 feet before crashing into a barrier and flipping. The car was again airborne when it flew over a passing Raleigh Police Department detective on his way home from work in the eastbound lanes of I-40.

The Charger came to rest on the far side of the road in a construction area while its engine landed 50 feet away. The driver, a teenager, was transported to a local hospital with a possible broken leg. Officials say he faces multiple charges, including speeding to elude arrest and careless and reckless driving.
