Beginning Friday, some facilities in Raleigh will go dark for bird migration.

According to the City of Raleigh, all non-essential lighting in city-owned facilities will be turned off between the hours of 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. to help migrating birds passing through the area.

Bright lights can attract and disorient the nocturnal migrating birds.

The city says decreasing the amount of light will also save money by reducing energy consumption.

The lights will be shut off every night until the end of November.
