The Corolla Wild Horse Fund in the Outer Banks is mourning one of their stallions one month after the animal's death.

The non-profit, dedicated to protecting and preserving Corolla's herd of wild horses, posted to Facebook on Monday the news that the horse, Roamer, died on Dec. 12 after showing signs of colic.

A tear in the horse's GI tract led to sepsis, according to the post. A veterinarian and staff tried to save Roamer but decided to let him go that same day.

"This has been absolutely devastating for all of us, and it's a great loss for the Corolla herd as well," the group posted.

"However, Roamer leaves behind his offspring on the beach and his legacy as an ambassador for his breed. We take comfort in knowing he will live on in those ways, but we are still grieving, and will be for a long time."
